Collection of Scrap Material
Step 1) All scrap material and excess inventories should be collected at points that are easy to access and secure. This should be out of the way of production or material flow areas. The scrap material or excess inventories should be sorted and separated into containers by like material. This material should have an inventory log sheet to keep track of all activity in the area. Step 2) On a weekly basis the containers or area should be checked to determine the quantity of scrap material on hand. Containers should be weighed empty to determine a tare weight for the container. Once a container is full, a gross weight minus the tare weight will give you a net weight of the material in the container. Write the description of the material, weight and date on the log sheet when sealing the container in the secured storage area waiting to be shipped. Security or authorized company personal should sign the log sheet to verify that the weight and description are correct. Step 3) Keep the material secure, a once a week walk through of your facility should be made to check parts left out at collection points. One of the biggest problems with the security of company inventories is that it never gets to these collection points or to the secured area for later processing. Step 4) When it is determined that the scrap is ready to ship, place the description, weights and any other information you need on the shipping document. Authorized company personnel, and the vendor that is picking up the scrap material should sign this document. Your company will keep a copy for its records. Step 5) Some excess inventories and scrap material are considered a hazardous waste and must be treated as such. In the case of hazardous waste material you must comply with all vendor and state regulations. Note: If you are shipping a Hazardous Waste, you may have to fill out a profile sheet, which specifies the physical and chemical characteristics of the material. Once the vendor accepts the profile you may then ship the Hazardous Waste in accordance with state and federal regulations. All shipments of Hazardous Waste must be accompanied by a Hazard Waste Manifest. It is your company's responsibility to comply with EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and DTSC (Department of Toxic Substance Control) regulations.
